Now That's What I Call Coaching 23 - Independence, we all need it at some point

Sleeve Notes

It strikes me that as housing, both rented and purchased, appears to be a distant or impossible reality for many...more and more generations of families are living together longer than in previous decades.

How can everyone in the household have independence when they need it, while still respecting other's values.

As ever, how you communicate will be key. A coaching approach is one method that allows you to understand other peoples needs and therefore make informed decisions.

Understanding people's needs/wants/priorities is the first step to feeling independent.

Here's a coaching playlist for everyone in the household, to support understanding and independence.

  • What's important to know while we are living together?

  • What does 'having my own space' mean to you?

  • Who is responsible for what?

  • What do you enjoy doing around the home?

  • What are your habits?

  • What assumptions do I make about you?

  • Where might we need to reach a compromise?

  • How will we manage challenges/differences without falling out?

  • How can we arrange the home so it works in ways for all of us?

  • When you have a bad day, what do you need from me?

  • What are the agreed 'house rules' on guests?

  • What do I do well? (Appreciation for each family member)

The Download

Consider... how much do you really know about other family members you share the same home with, no matter what their age?

Taking time to understand those closest to you, even if you think you know them well, can help to maintain understanding, appreciation and harmony in the household and create a feeling of independence when your living arrangements as an adult are not quite what you were expecting.
