Do you feel...

Loved?

Safe?

Accepted?

Understood?

Feeling deprived of some or all of these can be as detrimental to our overall health as not getting enough sleep, not eating well or drinking enough, although I'm not sure we place as much importance on our emotional needs as we should.

Everyone needs some kind of emotional support and reassurance from time to time. This could be in the form of things that you do for others, such as...

  • cooking a favourite meal.

  • giving space when asked for or intimated.

  • listening without interrupting.

  • paying attention to what's important.

  • genuine praise/recognition in a way others will appreciate.

  • helping find solutions.

Another way to tap into someone else's needs is to ask a relevant question to open up the conversation. Of course the questions work both ways!

Side 1 - Loved

  • What do you need from me at the moment?

  • How would you describe our relationship now? (Words and/or pictures)

  • What would you like to be different?

  • What could I do more of?

  • What would make our relationship stronger?

  • What do you value in our relationship?

  • How do we compliment one another?

  • What does 'Love' mean to you?

  • What do I mean to you?

Side 2 - Safe

  • What does personal safety look and feel like for you?

  • What, if any concerns do you have?

  • How can I/we mitigate these concerns?

  • What values are important to you?

  • What do you want from me?

  • Who do you trust in life and why is that?

Side 3 - Accepted

  • Describe yourself in words that help me to understand the real you?

  • What do you do well?

  • How will you let others know what is important to you?

  • What do you want to ask me?

  • What do I need to know about you?

  • What does 'acceptance' look like/mean for you?

  • How can I support you?

Side 4 - Understood

  • How are you feeling at the moment?

  • Who/Where do you need support from?

  • What do I need to know about your situation?

  • What do you want other people to understand?

  • How are you going to communicate this to them?

  • How can I put myself in your shoes?

  • What does being in your shoes feel like?

  • What can you do to help others gain clarity of the situation?

The Download

We will all have varying degrees of emotional needs to support our mental and physical well being. Sometimes we don't even know we need them until the thought or question is put in front of us.

If emotional needs are neglected for too long, such as the one's listed above, they can become a craving until satisfied.

As I'm typing this I am thinking of chocolate, but I digress!

By raising our personal consciousness around the important things like love, safety, acceptance and understanding, we can start asking ourselves questions like "What do I need in life to make sure my emotional & personal needs are being met?'
